Overview
Activity Monitor shows you processes. Background Doctor shows you applications — it groups the dozen helpers a browser spawns back under the browser, explains in plain language what each background component is and whose software it belongs to, and tells you what starts automatically at login. It is a system inspector written for people who want an answer, not a process table.
What it does
Applications, not process noise
A browser's renderer, GPU and plugin helpers are collapsed into the one application they serve, so the resource figures you read are the ones you actually care about.
Plain-language explanations
Each background component answers what it is, whose software it is and what starts it — backed by a curated catalogue of known macOS and third-party processes, with an honest fallback rather than an invented purpose.
A dashboard that holds still
CPU, temperature, memory, battery, network and disk on fixed scales, so a value means the same thing from one glance to the next instead of each chart rescaling itself.
